Dreambox

One of the most proud Linux stimulated satellite receiver is the dreambox receiver box. This television decoder can be used over terrestrial receiver also. The most prominent feature of the dreambox is that is it can be programmed or upgraded by the user himself. Dreambox uses its own dream crypt access along with conditional access modules. The software used by the dreambox is based on the previous software of dbox2. Due to the latter’s failure, this version of the software used that previous version. The most attractive feature of the dreambox receiver is the inherent Ethernet junction that also allows computer clusters to access the received signals. Amazingly, it can also store digital network file systems and transport streams. Many dreambox hardwares also posses hard disks of specific capacity. Usually the air on receivers allows only passage of signals but these dreambox are capable of storing data on the move of the signal.

The almost free service of dreambox helps it gain a perfect place among the satellite receiver users in every part of the world. The factor that anonymous developers and network facility enhancement makes it a step ahead than other receivers. From the dreambox brand, there was a non-Linux based satellite receiver that was known to be dreambox DM100.

Let us now see the models which are available in the dreambox. The model DM7000 features a processor and hardware. It also includes RAM, flash memory disc, makes use of smart cards and they are capable of converting the digital video recorder. But one main disadvantage is that this model needs a booting loader and only then the data can be recorded. Thus for the dreambox to work, we need to use JTAG. At times, we might get problems in working of flash which makes this version not preferred by many.

When we consider DM5600 and DM5620, they are similar in many aspects except for the fact that the 5620 model has an Ethernet through which it is connected. They are not being currently used. The next model to succeed the 5620 model was DM500. This model of dreambox is very cheap and small.  One main difference is that it doesn’t have a 7 segmented light emitting diode which are generally found in other FTA receivers. This version of dream box has the ability to receive and send digital signals too. Thus at present, we have plenty of new versions of dreamboxes coming up and which benefit people a lot.
